PhotoArtistaHD – Oil is one of those apps that is just pure fun, with a little bit of wow factor thrown in for good measure.  It’s got a simple and fun purpose:

… portraiture & fine art app that turns a photo “alla prima” (at once) into an oil painting masterpiece with no work on your part.

It does this well too – and it’s big fun to see your photos transformed so they look like oil paintings after just a couple of taps.  You can likely achieve the same effect with a number of good photo editing apps for the iPad, but this app does all the work for you.

awesome iPad wallpaper

This is actually a wallpaper made for the iPhone, but for me it works beautifully on the iPad as well.  It’s called simply Landscape 01 and it’s by Paul Isabella.  I spotted it via the RSS feed from the superb Poolga.com site.

I generally use more striking (or personal) images for lock screen wallpapers, while going with very simple, non-distracting backgrounds for the home screen.  This wall seems to strike the perfect balance for use on both screens.  It’s a gorgeous, subtle image that works perfectly for me in both places.

Montessori Crosswords iPhone app

L’Escapadou is pleased to announce that Montessori Crosswords will be free on September 3rd, as part of Moms with Apps’ AppFriday. Based on the proven Montessori learning method, the app helps kids develop their writing/reading skills by building words from a set of pictures shown. The app provides 282 words and associated pictures sorted by their phonetic complexity. At the time of writing, Montessori Crosswords is ranked #22 in USA top paid iPad education App and its average rating is 4 stars.

Good stuff.  I haven’t actually tried this app, as my daughter is already an advanced reader and writer – but a big part of why she’s got to that level is her Montessori education from the age of 3 to 6.  Her Montessori school – this one in Austin, Texas – was a superb environment where she flourished academically and as a person.

So needless to say I’m a big fan of Montessori methods, and this looks like a very nice little app for helping younger kids with their reading and writing skills.

Twitter app push notifications

MG Siegler at TechCrunch, talking about the official Twitter app for iPhone and iPad:

But the one thing it has been lacking and that users knock it for is the lack of Push Notifications. Well, good news. They’re coming. Soon.

Ha.  We were just discussing this in the comments on my post with first impressions of Twitter for iPad.  My feeling was that there are already enough good 3rd party solutions providing notifications for Twitter (e.g Boxcar) – but I know many users prefer to have the feature included in their favorite Twitter app.

So this should be good news for lots of fans of the Twitter app on the iPhone and iPad.

iPadPrintWirelessly

Most of you may be well aware of the fact stated in this post’s title – but I get asked this a lot and see lots of people talking about how it’s not possible to print from the iPad.

So I thought I’d do a quick post to confirm that yes, you absolutely can print from the iPad – and in fact if you have the right type of printer and a decent app, wireless printing from the iPad works very well.

I’m no expert on this subject (yet Smile) but I’ve been giving it a go at home with a couple of wireless printers – and finding that it’s quite easy if your setup is right.

Another iPad Protected by SquareTrade – Mine

by patrickj September 2, 2010

Back in June I posted about taking out warranty coverage for my first iPad with Squaretrade.  Among my top reasons for doing so were: I’m very impressed with the ‘extra mile’ warranty coverage offered by SquareTrade ever since I first heard details on the company and its offerings.  The very short story is that for [...]

Twitter for iPad – First Impressions

by patrickj September 2, 2010

Twitter for iPad was released late last night.  This is of course the official app from Twitter themselves and, more importantly, the creation of Loren Brichter – the developer of the excellent Tweetie app, which was bought by Twitter. Like many folks round the web – and seemingly 90% of the Twitterverse – I stayed [...]

The “I“ in iPad

by AliciaB September 1, 2010

(Image: Mirror on the go HD iTunes link) The first thing you see when you take the iPad out of its beautiful white box, is a reflection of your own visage. You see yourself, as reflected by the iPad’s display. Those with iPads can imagine why this amuses me to no end. It answers the [...]

During today’s Apple special event Steve Jobs shared a lot of large and impressive numbers about iOS and the App Store.  One of the iPad related numbers that stood out was that there are now 25,000 iPad apps available in the App Store. It has seemed to me over the last few weeks that new [...]

Has Your iPad Got Balls?

by patrickj September 1, 2010

Ah, now that’s a post title that you doesn’t often spring to mind.  The iBallz ‘harness’ for the iPad seemed to demand it though.  Here”s a little Intro to the iBallz harness (though the video above is a much better one): iBallz is a “one size fits all” shock absorbant harness that protects and enhances [...]
